Arturia MatrixBrute (A few videos to quench your curiosity!)

The Arturia MatrixBrute is an impressive beast. I am here to give it a decent showing so you can better understand what this synth is really capable of. Admittedly this synth has so much potential, simple videos won’t do it justice and I really recommend getting some hands on time with this beast for yourself. Below are some videos I have done (and I plan on doing many more) that show off just what this thing sounds like and can do. Be sure to check out all of these videos and more!

First lets check out a simple Ladder filter comparison.

Now how about we make a patch from scratch

And now how about a nice long live stream Q and A

and while we are at it how about an interview with the Product designer Glen Darcey

Arturia Announces DrumBrute analog drum machine

tournage-drumbrute-25

Arturia has announced its first ever analog drum machine.

So what is the goal with this unit? What are my thoughts?

Here is what I can say, In my opinion this is what the roland TR8 should have been. an all analog drum machine with both step and real time recording that provides the booming sounds of the 808 and 909 (Plus many all new circuits) at an affordable price point and with individual outputs per voice. This isn’t Rhythm wolf low stripped down rushed out low quality, instead its a group of high quality drum circuits (take a look at the engineers credited in the manual) paired with an updated version of the beat step pro sequencer. This sequencer really has some cool tricks up its sleeve like ratcheting and timing shift per step. Think of that like swing on steroids. Random from the beat step pro also appears and to top it all off you have a global steiner parker filter to get your sweep on. Everything syncs via modular clock or midi clock so you can pair it nicely with your modular… yep you can clock it from your modular or have it clock your modular!.

Another point of note is this drum machine has proper voicing… what I mean by that is the Snare and clap actually punch through a mix unlike many of recent analog drum machine releases in the lower price range… these snares actually crack hard! couple that with some 808 and 909 inspired (and also improved) designs for the kick and you have a pretty powerful unit.

The reverse cymbal is a new sound not yet heard in an all analog drum machine, and the tambourine and shaker sounds are really impressive (not just ho hum pass over sounds like on many other drum machines). Over all at this price point I am very excited to see an all analog drum machine. Hope to have a review unit soon!

Elysia Character Discrete Class A saturation and distortion

The Elysia Karacter is a really interesting rack unit and not just because it’s a high quality distortion or saturation.  The Karacter gives you a ton of tone shape characteristics and control in one simple 1u rack space. Control Voltage seems to be a buzz these days and for good reason. Control voltages give you extremely fast precise control over parameters and allow for easy interaction not just with modular gear but with various studio pieces. Karacter Gives you CV control which isn’t very common in units of this style. Lets talk more about the sound. There are a few modes of color to grab from this unit, the first of which is saturation. Continue reading

Threeler VCF from Ian Fritz and Synthcube.com

The Threeler VCF created by Ian Fritz is an interesting filter design. Utilizing a 3rd order design with 3 single pole filters in various combinations the Threeler is able to give a large variety of filter types. A mode select switch gives us 4 options of slopes. the first row consisting of Low pass configurations, the second row consisting of band pass , the third is a reversed order bandpass  and the bottom row consisting of high pass filters. we are give 3 simultaneous outputs at a time (giving us access to different stages of the filter.) CV is available to control filter cut off, frequency modulation and resonance. The Filter also tracks volt per octave nicely over quite a few octaves which gives us access to a nice sine oscillator.

Available now as a PCB, Panel PCB, full Kit and as a completed module from Synthcube.com or on their Synth release club ( a module renting/leasing program.

Pricing for completed module starts at $285
